Course Summary

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. It is now widely used in targeted devices such as smartphones and tablets, and so it behooves technical professionals to keep up with this new technology by being conversant with how native apps can be developed using the Android platform. This introductory course would cover some basics of the Android platform and framework API by examining a demo GUI native app that displays and speaks data obtained from a web services server.

Who Should Attend

This course is aimed at technical professionals in the software, mobile device, or other high-tech industries, who would like an introduction to the Android application platform and framework API.

Prerequisites

The Android SDK uses Java, so we require good familiarity with that language, or at least good working knowledge of other object-oriented languages such as C++ or C#, in order to follow the course material. Familiarity with XML and the concept of using a markup language for page layout would also be helpful. We would be using the Eclipse IDE to show code of the demo native app.

Reference material

Primary reference would be “Learning Android” published by O’Reilly Media, and the Dev Guide material at http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html, as well as the materials in the Resources and the Reference sections. Other books on Android could be also used or recommended as appropriate.
