This is a practical, fast-paced, crash course on the concepts and procedures needed to install, configure, administer and troubleshoot Linux (and generic UNIX) systems. Topics include details of system startup and shutdown, account management, security, creating and using file systems, devices, device files; serial ports, terminal and printer configurations, software and package management, system backups, configuring automation and network daemons, system error logging, and operating system installation to name a few.
Lectures are reinforced by real-time demonstrations on live systems, allowing attendees to gain practical experience with configuring and customizing both Red Hat Linux and non-systems, both as an administrator and as a power user.
This course also provides the opportunity to advance the novice user in their understanding of one of the world’s most flexible and customizable operating systems, with the goal that they will become more proficient in working within a Linux/UNIX environment. By the end of this course, attendees will also have gained considerable experience and understanding in what goes on behind the scenes in a UNIX operating system and how to effectively manage, solve problems and run a Linux/UNIX system, both locally and on a network.
Individuals who need to become proficient in using and administrating all types of UNIX and Linux systems,including embedded Linux or Linux running under VMware.This course would be a great starting point for anyone wishing to build and maintain a Linux system in their home,or to gain insight on how to effective manage a large set of Linux/UNIX servers at work.
This is an accelerated curriculum so, although not required, students would benefit from being familiar with either UNIX or Linux, and be proficient with the VI Visual Editor, prior to to the first day of class. A very quick overview of how to get started using vi or vim will be discussed in class.
